Can you legally unplug an intelligent computer

My favorite futurist Rai Kurzweil has set up a fictious court battle at the International Bar Association conference in San Francisco, Sept. 16, 2003. The case involves the first intellegigent computer BINA8 and if the company who owns "it" would be allowed to pull the plug.
